Heard about them before, i'm not so sure about the notch as I reccon you would have to reposition them frequently, surely a 'V' that overlaps is better. I read somewhere about a knife of tungsten carbide with a bevel of 30 degrees being extremely good at mass metal removal for sharpening knives.

A handy fella though, thanks for showing it.
 
This was the template for my one. It works fantastically well. 3 pulls along the sharpener and its very very sharp, and gets a small finish (2 or 3 passes) on the 6000 grit whetstone.
