I just came across this video on youtube, where the chap is making a 'candle' out of copper tubing and a glass Jar.

I'm kinda interested in having a go as they seem to kick out a lot of heat. Look good for emergency situations such as power cuts etc.

Anyone ever made one or heard of them before?

It's not exactly a short video, but i found it worth the watch.

I would be careful with glass jars of fuel if you're in a real emergency as it looks like it could break and set fire to things.

Agreed, but i'm guessing you dont need a glass jar. He's just showing a cheapo way he uses in his greenhouse. Could make one yourself from anything if its based on the same principles.

Yes normally.
This one is asking me to prove I’m not a robot and then presenting a blank black screen. I’ll ask my son to show it to me on his phone or I’ll try and copy the url and open it in YouTube when I get a moment.

Is this better?

Can everyone else see the vid ok?

Yes, I could view our original video.

I occasionally get a problem with some sites where it asks you to prove you're not a bot, possibly something to do with the IP address or something. It goes away after a while, but I'm not a robot...

Got it!
It’sa clever bit of kit.
If I were to make one I’d want some sort of stand that would prevent the jar From falling over, particularly for the taller version. Maybe the big flower pot is enough. That is clever.

If the roof of your conservatory or greenhouse is acrylic then you probably need the ubiquitous utensil holder or the mesh and tuna can. An ordinary candle has been known to punch a hole in an acrylic conservatory roof.

The source of the idea is Robert Murray-Smith, so credit where credit it due….

So firstly, some extra credit for you lot.
#1715 Improving The Copper Coil Burner As A Heater

Back to the ‘new’ video.

It’s a large wick being fed alcohol, but I’ve changed my mind because it is pretty cool that it works on that larger scale.

18:39 shows the wick heating the inner tube, which then burns like a heating torch!

The optimum lengths are likely to be impacted by this, since you want that inner pipe to be self lighting.

I would like to add a priming pan to the bottom.

It would be interesting to know how much fuel it goes through.

A long time ago I worked out how big an alcohol heater I’d need for a bothy and the sums didn’t add up.

Robert Murray-Smith has a couple of other videos which might be of interest. I've only given the number and title of the videos to keep this post short. I’m listing the videos in the order they are published, because often ideas are built on top of another. Similar videos are therefore grouped together.

Firstly, go back to basics, we are burning a carbon based fuel to achieve something. Usually lighting, heating and cooking. These three functions really benefit from specialisation. So the first topic I found very interesting is the history of Argand lamp.

1678 DIY Easy To Make Heater - No Welding
(This project really caught my eye... so I'm making an exception!)

Another history topic, focusing on social side.

1759 How To Beat The Heating Crisis

Some general interest, focusing on using a range of fuels.

1778 An Olive Oil Burner

1783 How To Make A Reed Multi Use Veg Oil Stove

1784 Mind Blowing Easy Method For Making A Cheap 'Biodiesel'
(The bigger question is history and what the other processes are... another rabbit hole for later.)

Lastly and complete the second topic, a clean-ish cleaning heater cooker.

1786 Off The Shelf Inexpensive Heating
(I have more nonsense rumbling here... but I'll close the reply since my two points are covered.)
