hi everybody, whate a greats source of information this site is!
my name is peter, or as it would be in poland piotr. i live in lake district, cumbria. i first moved here 9 years ago and stayed for hill walking and rock climbing. but after all these years i must have walked to most of places and climbed most of stuff within my range. and also often it's hard to get the right weather to enjoy these things. so i had two options: to move to another place or find other things to do. and that's how i got into "woody" stuff and water sports. i started working with a chainsaw coppicing and doing a bit of tree surgery/forestry and i realised that woodland is a perfect place for these rainy days. and if you can spend evening sitting by the fire, what else can you wish for?
nowdays instead of moaning about weather being too wet to climb i go for a bike ride, paddle or disappear into the woods. i find it really interesting learning all these traditional crafts and simple ways of doing things. what a satisfaction to make your own basket, chair, start a fire without matches and lighter.
i've just come back from scotland where i spent 6 days on "native paths" course with backwoods survival. i guess it's not everybodys cup of tea but i enjoyed a challenge of being hungry for few days while looking after essentials- building a shelter, lighting a fire, finding food. it's the moment when you finally break through tiredness, doubt, thoughts "what am i doing here?" and start enjoying experience, just keep on going, get some fire wood, check traps, boil some water. no moment to stop, if you do you'll end up sitting in cold, emptystomach.
and watching the nature!- weather changing every few minutes, waiting for tides, starting the day with first light, slowing down once the sun is down.
it's strange to sit in the house, having everything within an easy reach, being warm without layers on.
anyway that's why i'm a new member here. if there's anybody in cumbria/lake district wanting to do some stuff i'm keen to get out and meet new people and learn new tricks.
