I just took delivery of my new Helle Eggen:

http://www.ragweedforge.com/helle/eggen.html "The Helle-Eggen is a stout utility knife with a wide 10.5 cm. blade. The blade is laminated stainless steel. The substantial curly birch handle is 11 cm. and shaped to keep your fingers off the edge. This knife just feels good in the hand. (Blade is 3 7/8", length overall is 8 1/2".) "

I wanted a cheap, yet functional, Norwegian style knife that looked good as well as felt good and it certainly lives up to my criteria! It cost £41.99 from Woody's in Wembley.

The thing is, my knife has a slight fault-the handle is not quite in line with the blade. It's as if the blade or tang is bent. The blade itself is straight as a die, and so is the tang. the bend must be where they meet. The knife is great apart from this and it does not appear to effect the knife, it's just cosmetic. And it's something that's going to bug me!!

The question is, can I straighten it without damaging anything or warping the blade? Or should I get another and pass this one on?

The knife is a beauty and I'm very happy with it, but like I said, it will bug me...

Well, I was going to get them blasted by lasers this month, so the glasses can finally go. Yipee!!

Yup, I might take it back to the shop and get another ordered. He stocks some Helles but mine was ordered in special. It took a week, but that's ok-the guy who runs the shopis very friendly and we normally get into a political rant of some sort everytime I go in!! ;)

Good luck with the laser surgery Spacemonkey. For what it's worth, I had my 5 dioptres of myopia lasered away 6 months ago. I can now see 6/5 (thats the bottom line on the eye chart in my consulting room) without the dreaded specs.

It's great. Glasses and contacts suck when you're camping.

That's the truth...!
My eyes are only -1.75 and -2.25, but it's more than enough to make me blind outdoors. That and my astigmatism, which is quite bad. I found a place here that is cheap yet quite good, and very well recommended. It's the biggest company in the UK for doing the procedure. LASIK in both eyes with wavefront for £1700. Not bad me thinks.

Without my glasses the knife looks a bit better, so I might keep it for now... I can't believe it is so cheap, and even the packaging is cool.
