Ok. So I have several axes - all very sharp, several knives - all very sharp, and some saws. I've been using all these to make some hand crafted Christmas presents, letter openers, coin purses (with chocolate coins of course....) that kind of thing and I've been having loads of fun making them....

So I cut my finger - it's an anoying stingy cut right on a joint that irritates all the time. What did I cut it with? Axe? No. Knife? No. Saw? No. Bloomin' sand paper!!!!

Sand paper paper cut.... grrrr....

Just had to get that out of my system..... Anybody else done the same?

Ouch!
Those are the worst!

I used to work with furniture, packed in cardboards boxes. That means weight behind the cardboard and it's edges.
And occassionally you would let a box slide through your hand with a foreseeable result.
Those cuts took weeks befor they healed!!

Paper and cardboard cuts all the time at work, they're no fun. The worst is using tiny files on the tangs of knives and sticking them right into my thumb every once in awhile. That's REALLY annoying!

Aloe gel - I've always got some to hand. It stings at first, but it keeps the cut clean and the skin soft, so heals quicker and less painful in my experience. Also good on burns. I frequently cut myself with scalpals at work mocking up designs, but never with my axe or knives, but maybe I shouldn't tempt fate...

Aloe gel sounds like a good idea. Think I'll get some. Thanks. Like you I've never had an axe or knife incident. Occasionally got myself with a needle stitching leather but that's my fault as I just never get on with thimbles. got more to do later as I still need a couple of bits so all this "never had a knife accident" is going to get me later. Wonder if you can pre book at A&E?

Well if you could pre-book A&E then I would get a multi-booking discount if I tried to make the sort of stuff you are making. Cackhandedness has a new definition in the OED after my first attempt at a pepsi can stove (Dr Pepper actually as I don't like the other cola type of drinks) and that was me. I was proud of my last efforts to make something. I made dyneema zip pulls (1.5mm or 2mm thick). Cut them to length with a tiny whitby knife (none to the same length and some way too short as well so got scrapped) then burnt the ends with a lighter. So guess what I have now? A burnt thumb tip from the lighter and a cut in the pad of my middle finger from where I stuck the point of the knife in my finger before drawing it back to cut the dyneema. I am thinking those £2.50 zipper pulls from Alpkit might be a good idea in the future. Can anyone beat that for stupidity with a knife / lighter?

I do like the idea that some have had of making their own presents. The idea is sound for me its the practice that is not.

I tried pulling up some green bracken this summer when we were building a hide, it totally shredded three of my fingers across the creases and took over a week to heal up. I have total respect for bracken now.

240 grit sand paper under my thumbnail got me when i was finishig of a wooden bowl...got infected too so was painful for a week or so until it popped....then it was so nice to be able to pick stuff up again without pain.
