My kind visitors from Canada just brought me a very nice present. I have been trying to get one of these for ages but huge shipping costs from Canada have put me off.

I am now a proud owner and I have to say it is the sharpest knife out of the box I have ever had. Not only is it shaving sharp but you could actually shave with it

I like the Grohmann shape. I got one as a kit years ago (was one of the first knives I made) but it was a flat ground version but as I had such a pig of a job to make it, I sold it on. I really shouldn't have so it's on the list of designs to make for myself to keep.

I found a couple of pics.

After a few attempts at a handle, I realised that the tang was bent so I cut it down and madeit an out-the-back lanyard.

The Large Camper is my absolute favourite cutting tool of all time, bottom left.

You can get them as factory seconds if you are prepared to wait, which brings the price down a bit. Most of them I got as swaps for UK kit with folk in North America, which is the way to go if you can.

I have to admit I've not used the large one much but hope to as its a great fit to my hand. I got it with the vague idea of doing a bit of pioneering with it so I did up a spare, broken handled chisel to go in the sharpening steel pocket as it was something I always missed when out faffing in the woods.

This knife is great in the kitchen, too! You're finger doesn't collide with what you're cutting on, just like it is with real kitchen knives.

Whoever wants one, try this site: www.outdoormesser.de He's the main distributor for Germany and perhaps the shipping isn't that expensive over the Canal, than over the Atlantic. For translations you can write me.

I've found the flat grinds are great for everything (I use them for food prep even at home over the tarty French and German kitchen knives we have).

I've only got the boat knife in the sabre/hollow/original grind and thats not quite so good for whitling. It's also the only one I have in carbon and it does show a lot of staining from food prep which bothers some.

Some seem to have a problem with the stainless steel they use, clainming its too soft or some such but i've never had any issues with it.

The ergonomics are great, which is the main thing for me.

I wonder if anyones made a version with a scandi bevel?

I like the style of the Canadian belt knife.
I have a Grohmann, its a versatile tool.

I also have a clone by R Murphy www.rmurphyknives.com that is carbon steel and every bit as useful.
The price is much less than the Grohmann yet still a good little knife.

www.knivesaustralia.com.au has a nos German made blank listed as well.
With this one, you could put your own scandi grind to it.
