I am a british expat, I live over in the alps near where they filmed the movie, the great escape .
today I was taking a walk past the jump scean place with my daughter and I came across a British film crew recreating the event .
so we hung out for a bit and took some photos for you all .
they had 2 triumph bikes , an old and a modern the jump was made with the modern

Worth watching a documentary film called On Any Sunday which possibly has the cheesiest opening scene I've ever seen.

Anyway, Steve McQueen is in it, really riding in real races and it turns out he was pretty damn good as well.
Good bit of motorcycling history to watch.

Wow, what a thing to stumble upon. Possibly one of the most iconic movie scenes ever.

I think they where filming it for a uk tv documentary, so I guess you may get to see it sometime.
the name of the bloke making the jump was Guy Martin ( I never heard of him, but the film people said he was famous)

Even better. Guy Martin is a well known British motorcycle racer and TV presenter, quite a character.

He has done some of the best TV programs I have seen.
‘Our Guy in .....’

And ‘Speed with Guy Martin’.

You didn’t really think the bikes used in the film were German Armed Forces did you? They were Triumphs in disguise, hence Guy taking the jump on a more modern version.

No, that is what I wrote.
They should have used the real deal though. All the bikes they used in the German Army were fully fit to perform the jump.
The best one was the BMW R75, but the others were very capable too.

It will be fun to see Guy's program!.

That’s for sure, he’s been compared with the lovely roll-up smoking and tea drinking Fred Dibnah. There’s something very stoic about those Midlands tea drinkers. Sensible and no bloody nonsense types that just get on with it. :coffee2:
