I am part of a team of European woodworkers involved in a cultural exchange with Japan in August. We will work with master temple carpenters building a Japanese Tea House with Japanese tools and techniques and a European timber frame with our tools and techniques.
Gransfors Bruks have kindly sponsored up and are giving some of their excellent axes for the Japanese to use. Being a small company they do not normally undertake this kind of sponsorship but it is a very special event which is attracting a lot of publicity.
I just did some research on the company history, on how the axes are made and how that compares to how most axes are made and put it in a blog post here. http://greenwood-carving.blogspot.com/2010/05/gransfors-bruks-axes.html
We will be taking some of my favourite Swedish carving axes and also some of the bigger hewing axes for squaring large timbers.
Those who have not sen it before might like this very short vid of the axe forging at Gransfors

and compare it to this forging sledge hammers in Korea.

and here is one where they are doing the hand forged range at Gransfors, the second half shows using an axe to hew log cabin timbers.
