I've 2 Garmin GPS's they are very good for plotting and for recording tracks. I do navigate with them but DON'T trust them...I always back up the reading / bearing with a map and compass. I confess however that I do navigate with my Pocket PC phone which has GPS and OS maps on. They are a good tool, just not a complete replacement for a map and compass. Having said that unless you get injured you are never going to be far from anywhere in the UK!!

Having used several gps for years since they became available, they are definatly not trustworthy for very accurate recording unless you have certain accessories.

As for being not far from anywhere in the UK if your injured...that's one heck of an ill informed statement to make. You would not believe how remote you can get in Scotland where there are few roads, let alone houses with folk in them on those roads and areas with no mobile reception. That's how tourists get killed/injured, they just assume it's not far...

If you have a waas-enabled GPS you can be accurate to within 10m or better - that's plenty for most navigation tasks, especially combined with a map.

I've taken waymarker readings which correspond exactly to a 1:50,000 OS map - unless you're in the military it's unlikely you'll ever need to be more accurate than that.

Having said that... I spent 15 mins arguing with a mate that his map reading skills were off at the top of Helvellyn, as my GPS said the summit should be 50m further on.

Only problem was the sheer cliff in front of us, meaning 50m was in the middle of thin air.

Turns out I'd left it set to nautical measurements from a previous sailing trip, which is useless for land-based navigation. :o

Useful lesson learned!!
