Well, I used the Katadyn Pocket Filter in the field for 20+ years. It's heavy and a lot like work. I switched to the Pur Hiker which is now the Katadyn Hiker and life is good. Don't know anything about the Pre-Mac.

After surfing hours on the net, trying some models, talking to loads of people selling / owning them I came to the conclusion the Katadyn Hiker (the same as Hoodoo has) would be best for my needs. Things that need your attention / you have to think about:
- price
- price per liter (price divided by capacity of a single filter element)
- capacity per minute
- what are you planning for
- where are you using it - the bush or somewhere where you need a filter that is capable to filter out chemical (agricultural / industrial) polution, etc.

With the old PUR Hiker I have, they offered a filter or a purifier cartidge. In North America the filter will be enough but the purifier is needed for third-world viruses.

Are the two types still being offered? The filter was cheaper than the purifier cartidge.

For reference - the katadyn combi contains the same filter as the pocket - plus an (optional) carbon filter for removing taste - the filter runs fine without this in though.

the combi is 3cm longer than the pocket, and 20g heavier, and has a plastic body rather than a metal one, but you might choose this one based on price, 99 quid instead of 180.

Used a katadyn pocket on many occasions, and it is a brilliant filter - if you're using any filter in the field with water high in particulates (sand, mud etc) then take a second container that you can use to let dirt sediment out. The filters in these things tend to clog up a lot with bigger particles, when what you're really wanting to filter out is the bugs in the water.

Hi, I bought a PWP NATO Waterfilter from

it screws onto a pattern 58 bottle (so you don’t get grit in your clean water), seems to clear everything all the rest do, is gravity fed so you can get on with something more interesting (no pumping), lasts for 1000 litres (even though it only says 500 on the page) and is £30!

And the army trust them.

im pretty sure they cannot.. the only way i am aware the only way of treating sea water is by disstilation.

No, you can't purify seawater with one of these filters, as salt is dissolved in the water, rather than being a particle (like dirt or bacteria) that can be filtered out.

There are desalination filters on the market, but these are more specialist and often more expensive, and usually not portable.

However, you can distill seawater in a simple still to get fresh water which can then be drunk - just boil the water and make sure that the steam condenses and is collected.

No, they can't process sea water. Sea water can be purified by reverse osmosis.

i've got a pre mac treker travel well £69+p&p with spare filters from uk softmilitary,top peice of kit it filters and purifies in one its easy to use with littl or no effort when pumping,virtually any source of water can be used ecept salt water.
only two minutes standing time before drinking four if the source is really sus,i.e.
stagnent pools,ponds and puddles,replacement filters are reasonably cheap concidering you get over 200ltrs from a set and best of all it comes with its own carry case and the unit is the size of a can of redbull.

highly recomended and not just by me

I think the best value for money, and with great performance is the MSR Miniworks

Interestingly the $80 rrp is translated to £80 in the rip off uk. Maybe they thin it is easier to change to a £ sign instead of calculating a fair exchange rate? Anyway, 2000 litres form the filter and a litre in just over a minute when I have used one.
