Yes, looking, it just seems to mean a tight weave. Some of the much lighter-wearing, plain weave gabardine clothes I have are in a Pima cotton, which is like the long staple cotton used in Ventile apparently. But, the weave on those particular pieces is rather closer than that in the Ventile ones I have. All of the different bits of Ventile I have look the same in terms of the denseness of the weave.

I therefore deduce that Ventile is just a proprietary brand; a moderately tightly-woven, plain weave, long staple cotton gabardine with a DWR on it.

It has taken me years to cut through the crap and get to that. :)

I have an old burberry, tan shorty trench coat - you can get away with them here. That's in gabardine twill like you say TLM. But a totally different hand and drape to the ones I have mentioned.

Now I am reminded that there is wool gabardine, I have a new project.

Ventile is now made by Stotz & Co in Switzerland. I had a navy coat made with the cloth and have mixed views on it. Once the DWR (durable water repellent) wore off the waterproof properties were no where near as good. Not convinced to be honest.

Ventile works...but in the old manner. Under a heavy rain your jacket it is wet but since cotton cloth swell not a lot of water could pass trough. Double ventile is more waterproof but heavier.

So, you need something warm and hydrophobic (like lanolized wool) under your shell and in heavy rain it is a good idea to add a rainproof protection on your head and shoulder.

Sass ventile jacket under heavy rain. Blaze orange protection. My friend has G1000 with added netherland army goretex liner under it.

Sass ventile jacket under heavy rain all day, turn dark brown. Half cut red Raincut from Decathlon.

Wet ventile smock (Tamarack), with double layer on shoulder, hang to dry after one day of rain in mountains. It is quite stiff (like carboard). If it is freeze it would be rigid. Added protection from hiking unmbrella. Note also the ziploc for added GSM protection.
