Full Scandi Fallkniven H1

Hello all, I was hoping that you may be able to help me with some thoughts of mine. I recently added an H1 to my Fallkniven collection, fantastic knife, but the edge is far to obtuse for my preference. I've done the math (which means it could be way off) but a full scandi edge to the factory bevel would give me a 18* edge (5mm spine with a bevel 16mm from the edge) which is the same as my Roselli Carpenter, which cuts like no tomorrow, yet I don't worry about damaging the edge when carving hard or batoning. What are your thougts, is my math right? I know different steals respond differently to edge angles, will VG-10 be 'stable' with such an acute edge?

I have been using a Fallkniven H1 in bushcraft related tasks for several years now.

I know what you mean by a robust convex profile.

Personally, I thinned mine a bit, as I still wanted the edge retention & additional strength of a more robust convex profile.

I have no idea what angle the finished edge ended with as I used feel to adjust the edge.

VG10 is a good steel. A polished edge will certainly help it resist chipping in normal use. I finish mine by honning to 12,000 grit micromesh before stropping with bare leather and have not noticed it prone to chipping at all.

Hey Mick,

Thanks for the video and input! I have had problems with my F1 chipping on me and I think it was due to finishing it with a toothy edge, VG10 is good stuff, but needs an extra fine finish I think.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger and try out full-scandi, I just need to find someone who can help me out with that as it's too big an overhaul for myself. Until then I'll work every now and then to bring down the angle and I'll see how that works for me.

Norris my maths says its 33 degrees...
That sounds a lot more obtuse than 18 degrees!
BTW I'm doing GCSE maths but my teacher's teaching us A level stuff...
