Maybe posting in the wanted area would be better than resurrecting an 8 year old sale thread.
The chap who posted the original thread was online around xmas time. You never know. He may have some available and and see the post.

no takers at the time, so one never knows. Not many replies on here, so perhaps not a popular item?
Don't recall anyone showing off hewing axes over the last 18 years. They are a specific tool for a specific job. Long forgotten after the Chainsaw and chainsaw mills we created, that plus heavy lifting gear/transport that just take the logs to a proper sawmill. They are, shall we say... more than a little 'niche' these days.

I agree, was hoping that might mean availabilty. I can get a new GB model, but i like the steel and feel of the older stuff so ive been holding off in the hope something may turn up.

i think i remember a guy in the UK that was forging new ones, but ive been searching and dont see anything at this stage. He may have found out demand was low and stopped making them.

Highly likely. Cant imagine they are a quick/easy job as they need offsetting. Expensive axe that not many want... Not gonna be worth their time outside of a direct commission.

Have you checked Ebay in the US? Always a good place to start. Cant directly order them due to ebay rules, but you can message sellers as they are normally happy to post outside of the US so long as you cover the postage costs... then theres import/custom fees... But sellers are normally ok with putting the value as lower than the threshold... but thats at your own risk. Personally never had an issue.

Yes ive been watching for a while, and theres some folks that know they have a nice one and just start dialiing numbers! and then there some that are well worn and abused, just have not hit on the right one as yet...

Aye, that's normally the way of it for older stuff. I'm sure you'll end up with one at some point... question is... do you know how to use one? l tried one years ago... They certainly need their own technique... Chop, twist, pry... I was, shall we say... somewhat shite at it. But i only tried a few swings.

I started a thread in another sub forum.

There are a few of us, myself included :D As mentioned, hewing axes are quite niche, but there are a lot of folks getting into timber framed building and heritage construction these days so there is definitely a market for them! Most of mine tend to be to various Medieval patterns (T-axes primarily)

I don't make standard patterns, instead I make to generic styles for whichever period I'm asked for. Most of the time I end up supplying just the heads, since the people wanting to use the axe SHOULD have the ability to make one ;-)

The axe at 9 o'clock is a double bevelled hewing axe, 4 o'clock was a left handed side axe, the rest normal double bevelled choppers

I've made others, but these were the first pictures I had to hand. I usually make a couple of hewing axes at a time, but only if I have a customer ordering one already. I've got one like the bottom axe in the group of 3 above, but it's big and has a twisted eye (that's a deliberate feature, not a cock up!) and so is a bit niche even for these tools!
