by far and away the best folding shovel on the market at the moment is the Austrian made Glock entrenching tool:

almost indistructable and very very well designed, expensive though
Hey, I agree with Stuart on something gear related.
The Glock is not quite the best dirt digging shovel of all of the military e-tools, but it's a close 2nd or 3rd. The best digging shovel, IMHO, is the Vietnam era straight handled US military folding shovel that was copied directly off of the German paratrooper folding shovel from WWII. However, the Glock is probably the best snow shovel of the lot.
The Glock shovel is about 1/2 the weight of the current issue US Army 'tri-fold' and folds to just about as small. It also makes a good paddle for a boat or a raft. The saw in the handle works OK, and there is a screwdriver tip in the end of teh saw blade that both serves to help disassemble the shovel for repair and maintenance, and it helps the saw stab into the ground when cutting roots that get in the way of your digging.
If it has a downside, I'd say that it would have to be that because of the polymer handle, you really cannot use it for shoveling hot coals from a wood fire, and that is kind of handy to do sometimes.
