Folder with just a knife and saw?

Kneissler seem to have stopped making their knife saw combo. I have one somewhere. Otherwise, Hubertus or Weidmannsheil or Puma or even Linder might be the people you are looking for. German folding hunting knives, often stag-handled. Lovely, lovely things.

Also the Boker Optima is a heavy folder that has a saw blade which is very easy to swap in and out. I have had a bunch of all these beauts.

Anyway, here is a smaller Boker at Heinnie's

And here is a Puma, because:

Seems Walter Röthlisberger has retired. He made traditional looking pocket knives.
Though seems he handed it over to

Has anyone ever actually contacted these guys? I’ve pinged them two emails in English and then even blagged a third one that I roughly translated to German just in case it was a language issue which stopped the replies. I’ve heard nothing back whatsoever.

Those Puma knives are not what they once were.

+1 for the Mercury. Quality, and quite chunky for a 2 layer.

You could strip an old SAK and build your own. Not too difficult. Or ask a custom SAK modder to do it, depending on budget.

In case anyone’s interested in the Rothlisberger, they replied today…

“Hello
Thank you for your inquiry, sorry for the late reply.
Prices for farmer's knives start at CHF 144 (knife with a single blade) to CHF 242 (knife with blade, saw, and awl), depending on the knife model. Shipping to the UK is CHF 20. Please note that additional customs and tax fees may apply upon receipt of the goods.
The knives are not available from stock and are custom-made. Therefore, the waiting time is approximately four weeks.”

262 CHF is around £240.

Yes, true, but you can still get the old Pumas relatively affordably. That Game Warden above will cost around 99USD new and the blade (which used to be 440C) is in 1.4116 steel (same as x50crmov15) - which I think is the same as in Victorinox - tough, corrosion resistant, easy to sharpen. A sort of standard for kitchen knives.

Found these earlier today whilst rummaging in the back of the wardrobe.

Just looking at the blades and tools available from Victorinox - can anyone just buy a handle that suits them and fit whichever blades they like?

It seems the simple solution to the OP.

However it raises the question - why does anyone buy a named Swiss Army knife. Why not build one to suit yourself?

Victorinox Safari Pathfinder ( top) was hard to find when it was available so pricey now unless you're lucky.

Walker (bottom) had sporadic availability but again, pricey now if you find one.

The Mercury in the middle is both available and good value.

The best of the lot though is the Farmer, if you can forgive the couple of extra tools. Alox handle, thicker blade, chunkier screwdriver and no thicker than the others despite it's 3 layers.

I didn’t know you could buy individual parts from Victorinox. I’d happily build my own. I’ll have a look, cheers.

Cheers, I have a Farmer in Alox. Interesting that it’s the same width as the others.

Just adding a link to the Mercury to save anyone doing the searching I just did.

I’m not sure that you can - I was asking the question.

There is a picture from Victorinox on the web of an empty three layer handle surrounded by all the tools.

Not quite convinced there - my Farmer is definitely thicker than my GAK, and the GAK should be the same thickness as the Safari Pathfinder (2-layer 108mm SAK).

Pretty sure you can't buy the bits, I think donor knives are needed. It's not very straightforward to take them apart either, the handle scales need heating to melt the glue, pins need tapping out, the back springs are fairly strong and hard to hold in position for fitting it all back together.

Not sure how, unless you have the Farmer X with scissors?

GAK is the same as Pathfinder and Farmer is slightly thinner.
