first aid does not seem(i may have missed it) to be a topic thats well covered here although in the field/ forest /wherever it may be a major need in the event of an accident.

I think that most of us consider first aid knowledge and training to be more than just desirable for people working and enjoying the outdoors.

Add to this the fact that most of us will be using very sharp edged tools and I think that first aid is an essential.

One of the main reasons that there is not a lot published about first aid could well be that it could be considered a legal mine field. For instance should I publish something on here that was incorrect or possibly hazardous BCUK could be held responsible and not me as an individual.

There have been many threads about different First aid kits, who is qualified at first aid and even a few about natural remedies...

Try these:

In fact when you search "First", "Aid", or "First Aid", it says that it is too common!lol :lmao:

Hope they are of interest to you Mate,

Bam. :D

I saw youre username on here and thought "Seen that name before" and sure enough after seeing the pictures on Visordown I understand your interest in first aid.

I don't thiknk its a subject that could or should be learned from a website like BCUK, It needs proper training with a qualified instructor and I recomend anyone who spends time outdoors to get at least some basic training. It could save someones life.

Couldn't agree more, the sooner it's taught as part of the National Curriculum the better/

Do a course, it's the only way to learn, then practice, practice, practice.

I agree CharlieFox, I wish it was part of the National Cirriculum. But until it is I believe that every responsible parent should ensure their kids have at least the basics.

i'm a qualified first aider and this was beond my personal first aid kit (it would have been used up in about 45 seconds ) and the work one started to run out rapidly. ambalance turned up within 10 minutes.

if it had happened while out miles from anywhere it's a real survival issue.

Not a nice injury.

If I may ask, what was in your personal first aid kit and the works ones.

If they haven't got them it would be advisable to get some shell dressings into the kit at work and some into your personal kit.

If used properly shell dressings can staunch the blood flow quite effectively as they provide compression to slow the flow of blood and the absorbent pad allows blood to congeal. They are proven to be good as the armed forces have been using them for years (every man carries one).

Good to see you on the mend and as with the other folks I hope that you GWS.

First aid is definately a must.

Only had to use it once so far, someone pruning branches off a fallen tree didn't realise his best mate was behind him, billhook took the branch off and carried on into his mates wrist. Fortunately missed everything major.

Used to carry two rucksacks in the most dayglo bright colours full of firstaid kit.

yeh doing a course is a very good idea - i use to teach it myself - i also spent 5 seasons lifeguarding a beach - and though a course is invaluable you will not learn it all no matter how good a course is or how good you are a student , in the normal 4 days these courses are run - yes you can learn cpr in an afternoon but all the other stuff that comes with it takes a little bit more time and as it is a skill most of us do not have to use too often it also tends to fade .
most organisations forget this -ie like work places - who send some poor soul on a four day course then label them as the first aider and expect them to deal with everything that then comes up and then 3 years later they send them on the same course just to keep it current and so legally they are covered . in my opinion a first aider needs at least 2 hrs training every month just to keep the knowledge current in there mind
how ever if you are a good soul and you treat one of these first aid at work as a foundation course to develop nd cultivate your skills yourself then you are well on your way . how these course relate to outdoor education and bushcraft is limited but like the basic paddle strokes you learn in kayaking are the bases for adapting to greater challenges - the basics always remain the same how you adapt them for the particular sittuation you find yourself in is what counts

I think First Aid is a Must for Bushcrafting.I intend to book my son and myself on a course, when I find one I can afford. Got details from Nightfreight £140 + vat, each. Do colleges do courses?

when i'm away i carry two first aid kits. the small one which is my "immediate action" kit and is kept on my person, containing steri-strips resusitation face mask, elastoplast, savlon scissors, small bandages, etc.
my large kit stays in my rucksack with my travelling pharmacy (immodium, paracetamol, diarolyte) more bandages, sterile scalpel blades, wound wash, surgical tape, blister kit, a couple of tampons, and a couple of wound dressings

Just a thought. How about trying to arrange for a first aid trainer to run a course specifically for bushcrafters, Bit like a group buy for first aid. Would there be any interest in such a course?

Everyone should have a certain responsible knowledge of first aid.Burn,s,cut,s ,resuscitation, broken bones and other situation,s ie fits, choking, childbirth. Why not ,we are all needing to be more caring and responsib le instead of being Sued and living in our own shell. It should be taught in school, parents should encourage their kids more in the essentials. How many people reading this went to the cubs, brownies, guides, scouts, etc.Where it was first nurtured and now forgot, their kids including mine just don,t care. Right what do you do what do you need.1 common sense and willing to learn.2 Equipment.3 PRE-PLAN.We can be taught, and we can refer in some sort of first aid. Some stuff we can do until then.I carry butterfly stitches,if its not stitched in less than hour its no good.Honey can be used to cover an open wound.Clean running water over a burn,Cling film is the best burn wound protector. These are some things we can do, Learn first aid ,its very satisfying and we all owe it to each other.cheers fil
