After mistakenly ordering 2 waterproof boxes in the wrong sizes, I decided to make a couple of kits to keep handy (Very geeky I know, but I feel like ActionMan/James Bond around gadgets.

Firstly I have made a small fire kit which is small enough to keep in my pocket whilst out walking:

As you can see it all fits quite nicely in an OtterBox 2000 with room to add some cotton wool.

The contents:

  • 3 x WetFire Tinder Cubes (Red MSR Box)
  • Blastmatch
  • LMF Scout Firesteel
  • Green Heat Gel (Mini Nalgene Bottle)
  • Primus Blueflame Lighter

Quite possible overkill but I think a fire is one of the most important aspects of survival. On my person I always carry a knife (Fallkniven F1 or WM1), MSR Titanium mug & Half Litre Nalgene bottle, Waterpurification Tablets & Whistle so feel this adds a great edge to my kit. I also use the titanium mug to boil water in as I have added a wire bail loop.

SURVIVAL KIT

I also managed to order a much bigger box (Wrong sized again) so have made a bigger version or a survival kit to keep in my sholderbag or car. I know survival type kits are usually frowned upon as they are usually far too small to be useful so I decided to use this bigger box to fit a decent sized knife and other items in.

  • BCB Fishing Kit (I have added better hooks, shot etc for UK river fishing)
  • Button Compass
  • 2 x Wetfire Cubes
  • LMF Scout Firesteel
  • Petzl e+Lite Headlamp
  • Greenheat Gel (Again in small Nalgene container)
  • Small Leatherman Tool
  • Silver/Gold Foil Blanket
  • Water Purification Tablets
  • 8 Steri Strips (Butterfly Stitches for deep cuts)
  • Inova Micro Torch
  • Buck Lockable Folding Blade
  • Fallkniven DC4 Stone
  • A few plasters

There is still some room in there so I plan to add some superglue, wire saw, mirror, whistle or any other suggestions?

Cheers

Great idea. I'd work out what your scenario is before designing a survival tin/box. For example in the UK your hardly going to need a fishing kit to survive as your main focus would be rescue however in Norway it would be handy and sensible indeed to have a fishing kit. Looks good.

I have designed mine around a typical UK scenario, out canoeing and camping and thinking what could gowrong and how could I fix it and what would make it easier to fix so I don't need to cancel the trip. So...my kit is mainly a repair kit with some extra's in it. I can hopefully repair my hull, paddle, rip in a tent, wet sleeping bag no problem i have a blizzard bag and so on...For example paracord, repair tape, gaffa tape, cable ties, turbo flame, piano wire and the indespensible epoxy putty for hull repairs to canoes etc. Also a fire kit, a blizzard bag, foil cup, instant beveridges, boiled sweets, glucose tabs, very strong painkillers and a mini leatherman. All goes inside a plastic screw top fruit container which is waterproof except for the blizzard pack which goes somewhere else.

I like your kits eskimo, seems to have most bases covered, but I wouldn't have the two torches in there as neither takes standard batteries, making it harder to check and replace them in the future.

I'd also replace the folder with a small fixed blade and the foil blanket with the AMK version (more robust and less noisy in use).

Ziplock bags for water carriage?

Just my two-pennorth, hope it helps :)
