I showed this knife a couple of weeks ago and have just completed the sheath and etching. The sheath is 5mm veg-tanned leather, dyed black and sealed with wax. The etch is hand scribed using the nail-varnish and 9volt battery technique.

Looks great, it's tricky to get it that clean. What did you use to scribe the design on with? I always use a pen but find it a bit skinny...

Thanks guys!
I've had problems in the past getting the etch crisp myself. This time i used a dart and magnifying glass and it has come out well.

Nice one. I never thought of using a magnifying glass, der der!

I take it you didn't have the cotton wool on it for very long as it's marked it nice but not etched really deep into the metal. I always go a bit overboard and it isn't really necessary. I get a bit paranoid it hasn't taken and before I know it it's like the grand canyon.

Looking good, cheers fella

Yeah, that was another lesson learned the hard way! If you go too deep it will etch under the nail varnish and the crisp edge will be lost. I etch a little then dab with some tissue. Once it's blackened uniformly i stop.

Thanks guys, very much appreciated! I've got a 3 day fishing trip to Loch Awe next week so i'm going to put this knife to good use!
Anyway, i'd better crack on and fit a handle to it's twin brother.
