I use laser cut and etched Birch plywood backing for these double sided strops. Your choice of basswood or smooth or rough leather.
Basswood and smooth leather are perfect to accept diamond sprays or emulsions. If you're using the nasty bar type compounds then I suggest you opt for the rough leather option.
If you've not yet tried basswood for stropping, you really should! I personally don't use leather anymore.
