Didn't know it was called shagreen in English. I thought shagreen was the shark skin sandpaper that was used in cabinet making in the olden days.

I can really see why it is used for sword handles. Rub it one direction and it is as smooth as glass, rub the skin the other way and it grips like two pieces of Velcro. Had a go at sanding some wood this morning and was surprised how well it worked. I thought with a bit of sanding I would knock the scales off but they are still there.

I was unaware it was called shagreen.

further to Snufkin, The usual method for extraction of things requires a Mitchell Brother lookalike with a leather coat and baseball bat.
