I was coming home from a CCF week in Wales when the Suez crisis kicked off. When our train pulled into a siding for a couple of hours. The rumour mill went into operation and some of us believed that we were being rerouted to Southampton to join a troop ship bound for Egypt. Having missed National Service by two years, it was the nearest I got to active service. Maybe now l'm 84, the drilling, target practice and field craft training I had as a teenager may be put to use. I've always suspected that war with the US would happen some day.

I can't see it applying to infanteers TBH, at least not in role. But there are plenty of trades in CS & CSS arms (as were) which do not actually require the level of physical ability that are expected in "normal" regular/reserve service.

On the other hand... It ain't what people signed up for. I anticipate a more or less voluntary system, a la HSF, although possibly rather larger.

I wonder how many of you old and bold would go back if promised an SLR with wood furniture and good old DPM :p
Never got to play with an SLR. Before my time. Have had a play with an FN FAL. Almost the same rifle, didn't have a wooden stock though.

I met the SLR, just. But there was no wood involved. The L42 now, that was woody.

For some reason, my mind jumped to the EM-2. The wood stock precursor to the SA-80 from the 50's... But only for a moment lol. Never seen an L42 in the flesh, so to speak. They remind me of Weirauch Air rifles.

Has anyone with ears to the media heard of any other European based country doing similar?

If this is all being conducted to bolster a countries theoretical ability to generate an increased ability in its potential reserve of armed troops as a quasi paperwork exercise ( If NATO becomes somewhat fractured ) I would expect a similar Spin Doctoring from other countries.

Finland just raised the age of reservists eligible to be called for service. I am out of even that.

Just to note that per Armed Forces Minister Al Carns this afternoon, the programme will be "opt in".

I think with some ex serviceman it will be the case of, fix zimmer frames and charge!
Ex forces myself and at my age I wouldn’t last ten minutes on a battle field, yes I can still shoot, running over a hill in full kit, at times with my knees I can hardly run for a bus, we’re doomed, doomed I tell you, captain Mannering!

Good luck to any youngster with stripes on their arm trying to beast me back into shape.
Only if you want to, if you get too upset, ask that nasty corporal PTI, to have time out in your safe space, can’t have you being upset. All about your mental health wellbeing!

Aww, did t you have bitty off mummy today? Or are you just being obtuse and misunderstanding that an old man does not have the inclination to take part in this sort of farce?

I think/read it as they were just joining along for the banter.

Maybe worth reading again?
