You can't be that far from me, get some sycamore very easy to identify if your quick, as the leaves are falling now. I've had embers before using this for the drill and hearth.

No probs. Silver birch works well enough. I have some dry hazel that works well too. You just need some old palet wood for the hearth. Whacha doin' next week? I'm on holiday until a week on monday. We could get together for a natter and play around with bow and drill and flint and steel if you like.
