We lost greenhouse glass in previous storms, we were picking it out of the gravel drive for months!10 miles west of Taunton here. Four major panels of our 14x8 foot Halls greenhouse have blown out, despite being double- or triple-clipped in. One glass panel about 5’ x 2’ from the roof flew around 10 feet and smashed on the ground, but it looks like we’ve managed to save the others so far. Unfortunately we’ve also had 2 of the frame screws break off as well. They’re only made of ally but unfortunately they are an odd design to fit into the frame channels that means you can only use their screws to repair the frame. I’ve replaced them but it remains to be seen how long those screws will last……
We’re also in a power outage that started 2 hours back. The estimated resolution time for that is 00:30 tomorrow!
Cheers, Bob.
Is this cell phone alert something new, and presumably limited to a specific area? I've not heard about it before.Yes. Here also.
Certainly the most interesting sound I've heard for a while.
I may borrow it as a ring tone to entertain myself and others.
Looks like it's crawling out to get you...!Popped out to the in-laws earlier to make sure they were ok…. Had to take the long way mind.

Oh compostMultiple power cuts before I lost count and finally crashed out last night. It's still howling here in SW Wales. Loud crashings from the wood behind the cottage last night but not safe to investigate in this wind. The trees out the front which did have leaves are now completely bare, so Mother Nature sorted that out and they are all ready for new clothes in the Spring..
Where did all the leaves go?
Here....My front porch!!
Don't forget to check thee use by date on your hotwater bottle!! It has a circle with a year on it. IIRC it is either the production date or the use by date. Apparently they have a safe life of 3 years. They can last longer but the hot water can degrade the rubber and it ages on top too. The result the bottle can rupture and cause serious scalding.
Seriously with the increase in fuel costs there are more use of hot water bottles too save on heating. The result is that A&E are seeing more cases of injuries from failed hot water bottles. I have never liked them personally and prefer wheattie bags. These are cotton bags with some kind of grain in that you heat for a set time in the microwave according to the power of it. This heats the grains and you get the effect of a hot water bottle in a longer lasting and safer format. Just FYI only.
You have to keep them everso slighty damp, just a few drops of water from time to time, and not put them in the microwave for too long. (It's in the instructions) If you put them in for too long then yes, they can burn, I scorched mine recently doing this, and had to let if cool off then drip some water onto it. Been fine since but I keep the timer lower. Those grain bags aren't safe.
They can build up heat, and then when exposed to oxygen (throw the covers off) they go up in flames.
Fine to use around a sore neck when it's all open, but not happed up in a bed under duvets.

Wheat bags - Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service
Wheat bags can bring relief and comfort to you when you use them properly, but as with any product involving heat, there is a danger of fire and a risk of injury to you if you do not use them properly.www.notts-fire.gov.uk
Blimey Bob. I don't know where you are, but if you can get to South Lincolnshire I can lend you generator, power station & unlimited gas. We’re now 36 hours in to our power outage, and the power transmission company have extended their recovery time to 8pm tomorrow! We’re doing ok as my little camping stove is providing hot food and drinks to us and our elderly/disabled neighbour. I hope my supply of small gas cans lasts….
Our new log burner is going great guns and has been worth every penny as an upgrade over our old open fire. Shoulda got one a few years back. Thankfully the weather hasn’t really been cold, so we’ve kept the log burner throttled back, but it provides cheering warmth and light when it’s dark outside. I suppose we could cook on it if really necessary.
The only worry we have now, other than keeping an eye on our neighbour, is wondering how long our freezer full of goodies will remain sufficiently cold to avoid spoiling. It’s quite full at the moment and we’ve not opened the door on purpose. But it is a worry.
Do you need anything?Back online for a bit. Power down at 11am yesterday and not due back until tonight or next week. It's an HV outage so affecting 100s of homes.
As happened last time, both local mobile masts went out so no internet. As we've kept our copper phone we at least can dial 105 and get an update - most fibre people can't ring out. 4g now back for a bit.
Several very large trees down in our woodland and four down across our road a bit further down so that'll be blocked for a few days.
Hi Hugh . That’s a very generous offer, but hopefully the power company will come through before their second extended deadline. As we’re on the Somerset/Devon border it would probably take that long to drive over to yours and back. Having settled our neighbour last night we went to the pub in the next village over, where they have power, beer, food and light! Fingers crossed that the power company are telling the truth!Blimey Bob. I don't know where you are, but if you can get to South Lincolnshire I can lend you generator, power station & unlimited gas.
I've been o everyone everyone I know seems to be ok. A bit fed up as it's not the first time. The only worry we have now, other than keeping an eye on our neighbour, is wondering how long our freezer full of goodies will remain sufficiently cold to avoid spoiling. It’s quite full at the moment and we’ve not opened the door on purpose. But it is a worry.
We're fine thanks, well prepared but thinking of what we need to do as the weather and poor services are only going to get worse.Do you need anything?
Yeah that's a bit of a schlep. I'm happy we have the power stations - each one runs three freezers for 24 hours & recharges from the mains. So useful in these situations.Hi Hugh . That’s a very generous offer, but hopefully the power company will come through before their second extended deadline. As I said to Bob, if you can afford them, these rechargeable power stations are a great thing. Each of hours holds 2kWh & can run a freezer for days. We're fine thanks, well prepared but thinking of what we need to do as the weather and poor services are only going to get worse.
On a side note, it would be hard to get anything delivered at the moment as the black Friday sales have delayed normal deliveries and trees down will stop them for a few days next week.
