Looking for a long term shelf stable ( so whilst I like cooking and making not in this instance please, so no recipes thanks ) energy bar - nutty, fruity, potentially carby / protein type bar. One of those things that can be purchased and remains edible when I'm drawing a pension - should provide a good mix of things and flavour can be not the most important priority.

I guess basically kinda modern day take on Pemmican in a nice sealed wrapper.

Any suggestions? I've never had a Clif bar before but I'm sure someone out there has tried a few a lots of conclusions drawn.

Interested in hearing about these- I like the flapjack bars from home bargains but the shelf life on them is less than 2 years if lucky. Asda also have a range of protein bars but again the date on them is usually a year ahead.

Thanks, I think these maybe the old dreaded life boat rations - whilst the do function they are from what i remember quite difficult to stomach. I may get a little batch and just see how they are however
I wouldn't be surprised, they look like something out of a hardware shop..... yet, for some reason I'm quite keen on trying them.

Think Millenium bars are meant to be a step up from life boat rations with multiple flavours, though the actual bars look identical. Have a 5 year lifespan IIRC.

Things haven't tried are

Real Meal bars, they were at some point part of Resilent Nutrition, but have seeming split off as it's own seperate entity. No idea on lifespan.

And Luchos, doubt their lifespan is long, but I'm told are really nice.

Probably not what your looking for but for me it’s jerky and dried dates.

To be honest if anyone produced Pemmican bars in sealed wrapping I'd probably get some.
I know someone is going to suggest I make some and maybe I will - just wanted something more commercially available.

Vote here for Clif bars, they're my go-to for cycling and camping pick-me-ups. Good range of flavours (peanut butter one is good if you don't want something too sweet), more substantial than the competition (imo) and I'm happy to eat one if it's out of date - they last a long old time.

RealMeal Bars have an advertised shelf life of 20 months - seem to pack the highest calorie punch of 600cals per bar ( bars are quite big to be fair ) and do offer some subscribe & save deals to save some money but mostly they cost £4.99 per bar.
At 600 Calories they are the biggest bang-for-the-buck out there ( so far ) and seem to be an actual meal replacement.

Luchos bars seem to offer 130-150cals per block - but far smaller , than the Realmeal bars so makes sense.

Clif Bars come in a large range of flavours ( not important to me ) - seem to offer an average of 250cals per bar - from Amazon £2.25 per bar. - Couldn't see any statement regarding useable shelf life - maybe on the packet.

New Millenium Bars - Advertised 5 years shelf life - 400cals per bar - Texture wise all look the same sort of emergency life boat ration style " sawdust brick' - Couldn't find a UK distributor - USA Made - $70 for 24 Bars.

Roam Bars - ( Contains meat )

£2.57 per bar - Made mention in their blog that they don't use excessive amounts of chemical to extend shelf life - couldn't find any exact details but assume these bars are intended to be 'healthier' by omitting unnatural chemicals to prolong shelflife.

Nature Valley Protein Bar.

Protein bars are higher in protein than the snack bar I think most of us are used too. 40g bar.

If my bad maths is correct - per bar , 196 cals , 10g of Protein , ,12g of Fat -

From Amazon - Box of 26 Bars for £16.25 = 67p each. ( at time of writing )

Shelf life - no idea.

I think I will get some Realmeal Bars and see how they fare. May get a dozen in or so and sell a few off here to anyone interested.

Look into Millennium Energy Bars. They’re designed for emergency kits, have a 5+ year shelf life, and come in vacuum-sealed packaging. Dense, sweet, and very carby, more survival food than gourmet, but they do the job.
