Just a thought, does anyone use a regular ember pan when using fire by friction method,or do you use whatevers at hand.

Anyway this is my ember pan.

It is made of Hazel ,leather and antler

Hmmm, *very* nice, and a good idea.
I just use a piece of thick leather, though I have been playing around with some boiled and beaten Fomes.

Cheers,
Toddy

As an urban bushcrafter I usually use a piece of cardboard. Otherwise I will use a leaf, or sometimes I do the whole drilling on a slightly bigger base board and just collect the coal on that.

That's really nice Mate....top job :)

At the moment I just use a small shaving from when I carve the hearth board but Gary from Bearclaw uses a really nice carved and shaped ember pan with his set and I've been meaning to do the same for a littler while now....I think yours has spurred me on to actualy make a permanant one myself :)

Cheers,

Bam. :D

I tend to just use a piece of leather for my coal catcher - when I'm not using my set I bind the leather round the hearth end of the spindle - means that it stays dry even if my bow drill set gets a bit damp.

i once spent a hideously long time getting a good sized ember.. and used a largeish wood shaveing.. acting slowly in transfering it burned through the woodshaving and most of it fell on the floor.. there was not much chance of saving it and i was not happy!! lesson learned i spend a little longer preping something to hold it properly now!

that is really cool!! i love the antler on it. do you have a leather bag to keep all your tools in as well? i'd love to see it if you have.

Unfortunately i don,t have a leather bag to keep my tools in,but now you gave me an idea,so i will have to purchase some nice leather and have a go at making one.

I use cherry bark pans with the sets i use for teaching. They have had many an ember produced on them and are still going strong.

I must admit i ironed them flat to start off with. :D
