Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
As an urban bushcrafter I usually use a piece of cardboard. Otherwise I will use a leaf, or sometimes I do the whole drilling on a slightly bigger base board and just collect the coal on that.
At the moment I just use a small shaving from when I carve the hearth board but Gary from Bearclaw uses a really nice carved and shaped ember pan with his set and I've been meaning to do the same for a littler while now....I think yours has spurred me on to actualy make a permanant one myself
I tend to just use a piece of leather for my coal catcher - when I'm not using my set I bind the leather round the hearth end of the spindle - means that it stays dry even if my bow drill set gets a bit damp.
i once spent a hideously long time getting a good sized ember.. and used a largeish wood shaveing.. acting slowly in transfering it burned through the woodshaving and most of it fell on the floor.. there was not much chance of saving it and i was not happy!! lesson learned i spend a little longer preping something to hold it properly now!
Unfortunately i don,t have a leather bag to keep my tools in,but now you gave me an idea,so i will have to purchase some nice leather and have a go at making one.
