I was in my garden yesto and heard this strange loud scraping noise coming from the wooden panel fence, so I started looking around expecting to find a small bird or mouse scraping at it.
No birds in sight, no small mice or rodents, but a wasp.

The noise was incredible! - Yes it was amplified by the area of the wooden fence, but Ive never seen or heard anything like it!

So, would someone answer my question; why the hell was this wasp eating my fence?

I had exactly the same thing happen to me a few months ago.
Weird isn't it? I could hear it at least 10 yards away.

Wasps use wood pulp and combined with spit to make thier nests so I think they were collecting supplies to enlarge or reapir the nest.

They are indeed using the wood they scrape from the fence to make or repair a nest. We used to get it all the time when we had the wooden panel fencing. The fences are thin and usually made of soft wood, so they are easy for the waspies to scrape, and usually close to a suitable place for them to build a nest (your shed, garage, etc)...

They really are the most noisy eaters!

Nice one guys!

Ive heard that wasps make a form of paper or that their nests are made of a papery material.

But . . . . the little blighter was chomping for a good few minutes, where did it put the pulp?

No, but Ive just looked for mine and its missing!

The liddle buggers had it!

Had a wasps nest in the attick a couple of years ago and they munched all night long, drove me mad. They tend to look for softish wood and I suppose they carry it back to the nest in their mouths........
