Dogs & Bushcraft?

Hi all,

I have got a 18 Week old Malamute puppy (see avatar), and I am hoping to take him out camping and foraging.
Does anybody else out there take mans best friend out with them if so let me know how you get on and any funnies that have happened?

Nice dog by the way, very hardy and strong.....you gonna get her to pull anything? Cart, sled etc?

My 'boy' often comes with me, (see my avatar - star of the show Crufts qualified 2 years running ).

I shouldn't say it but he's worth a lot (moneywise) and some times my heart pounds 10 2 the dozen because he likes to wander off and do his own thing when I'm doing mine........but I trust him, he always comes running when I call him.

Me and the other half have been breeding & showing boxers for several years with some succes. I have a lot of experience of handling dogs and if I could offer one bit of advice it would be this: look after her/him and bond with them because when you do you've made a partnership for life.

In this heat my pup doesnt like to do much , so i picked up a dog water bottle from Betterware . It holds 500ml of water and has a fold up scoop for your dog to drink from . When not in use it has a hook for hanging of your belt or rucksack . Well worth the money at £5.99.

I have been in touch with a Siberian Husky breeder who lives about 15miles away and they put a team together andthey pull a special grass cart so might take him there for a pull in the winter.

when in germany the pups were always about. it felt strange when there wasnt one (poolhardy's yorkie and yarrow/missymisilums cattledog & patterdale) of them lurking about the place to be honest. what i will say is get your pup out as soon as the chase recall thing is reliable, posative experiance is everything for young dogs.

as for funnies, every trip mate. thats part of the reason to take him/her!

Hi this is my first post (ever to any forum) - have been reading for a while but never plucked up courage to write....

I always take my lab out with me, but he is a bit of a menace as he likes to wander off. He also disturbed a wasps nest recently and got us both badly stung, but I love having him there for company and he makes me feel a bit safer out on my own in the countryside.

I think dogs and bushcraft goes well together. Got a Shetland Sheepdog myself that i take with me as often as i can.

The downside must be all the ticks that he attract and i got to spend time finding and picking.

Nice dog.
I use Frontline,it doesn't stop them digging in but it kills the little sods before they can do any harm.It also kills fleas,on the dog and in the house.

I took one of our little Cavalier King Charles Spaniels up the Crib Goch route to Snowdon. In hindsight, a terrible idea, but she coped remarkably well. The first rock climbing Cavalier!

She's just had a puppy, so I'd better start training it early .
