Does a whetstone need to be kept wet when storing?

Japanese naturals can be kept wet I think but the majority of us have man made waterstones that go moldy/mildewy if kept wet...

I've used manmade Japanese waterstones to sharpen my woodworking tolls for the last 20 years and have kept the coarse and medium stones in water. I add a drop of bleach to inhibit mould growth.
