Does a whetstone need to be kept wet when storing?

Questions in the title- anybody out there offer me some wisdom please?

No, they need air drying before storing, I don't think the soft stone likes being stored away wet

As Shewie said. I usually leave mine out for a couple of days to dry before storing. The wife hates it!

My Japanese carpenter friend keeps is in a bucket of water under the sink.

Japanese naturals can be kept wet I think but the majority of us have man made waterstones that go moldy/mildewy if kept wet...

I've used manmade Japanese waterstones to sharpen my woodworking tolls for the last 20 years and have kept the coarse and medium stones in water. I add a drop of bleach to inhibit mould growth.
