DIY Tarp?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
if your trying to do it mega cheap then buy a 3mX3m builders tarp unless you want something that looks a little more proffesional then try your local textile shop. however it could work out more expensive this way, dont forget you need eyelets and webbing for loopholes, not forgetting reinforcements and sewing. :)

Thats the type of stuff, I would have prefered it rip stop and wanted camo if possible. Will send you a PM.

Webbing? What that then? Do you mean paracord type stuff? I know newbie

You can get ripstop camo builders tarps. The webbing is just material tapes used for your ridgeline (the line that runs down the centre of your tarp to tie it from tree to tree)

Try an army IPK, cheap as chips!
"as issued to the British troops for the construction of NBC Shelter.
A strong cord, tightly criss-crossed and held in position by stakes, supports a tarpaulin which in turn supports an earthen ceiling of up to 27 inches.

The KIT weighs under 2lbs. Completed correctly, the shelter is strong enough to withstand a Landover driving over the top of it.

The kit comes complete with six strong lightweight 10'' aluminium pegs for anchoring and 55ft of nylon para cord.
Groundsheet measures approx. 9ft x 5ft.
Ideal for manufacturing a 1 man bivvi, use as a make-shift tent to ride out rain, to provide emergency shelter, covering your foxhole or for collecting water.
All brand new and supplied in a sealed bag"

the King looks favorably on you!! :lmao:

seriously if this is for blatant Bushcraft don't spend any cash on it mate!

spend money on making a nice one that works when you are doing "real" Bushcraft!

I've used loads, all sorts of army tarps/ponchos ect.
I've found the IPK REALLY difficult to work with, if you stitch through it it weakens the area like perforations on toilet paper, duct tape won't stick to it, it has some unknown waxy finish which stops glue being used, i fixed grommets to the corners but only after reinforcing the fabric with nylon webbing.
and then the fabric itself isn't that strong.

used in the way it was intended you really can make a bunker with it, but only if used that way....making a tarp from it? not so easy.

I've used several...IMHO don't bother, but the packs are worth it for the paracord and tent pegs, use the sheet as a ground sheet!
to start off just use a 6ft by 4ft polythene tarp you can get from a camping shop, or I've got one from a £1 shop before. get used to it, it's advantages, disadvantages, etc before spending any more cash.

generally where tarps are concerned army ones seem to be pretty good.

No this isnt for the blatant bushcraft lol I looked at the IPK but dont fancy it want something a bit bigger

Still tempted by the blatent bushcraft tho.

I have 3 Mod tarps, excellent design also doubles as a stretcher!
another use of the stretcher handles? the strong stretcher handles I used them and successfully tied it and used it as a "pea pod" type hammock(enclosed).
