By all accounts and predictions throughout history such as the Mayans the end of the world is due December 21st - 2012 which only gives us another 4yrs 10months and 16days left to cram as much bushcraft in as possible!

What are your thoughts on this, are you a believer or do you think its just bogus.:)

The Mayan Prophecies... interesting reading, indeed most of the texts on ancient Mayan culture and their achievements are very good reads. They didn't exactly predict the end of the world as such, their calender has certain phases in it, at the end of each grand cycle ( I think it was ) there was some massive and global disruption according to their legends and histories. This cycle is due to end around 21st December 2012. Perhaps all the weird weather the planet has been throwing around is a build up to a massive polar shift, and we'll be hurled into the next ice age, will we be ripped to shreds then frozen solid like various creatures found in Siberia ( stomach contents were still found indicating rapid freezing after death ) or will we be sitting in the pub wondering whats next?

My mate and I decided years ago we were going up the hills with a carryout and sit down and see what happens.. :D

Cheers, Nag.

On the same date the earth and the sun will be in alignment with the center of our galaxy. Because of this some people believe that gravitational waves could cause our sun to scorch the planet.
There is also the comet collision theory aswell.

I remember when it was in the papers about nostradamus predicting the end of the world, and me and my mate were scarying the life out my little bro about it hehe.

but nah i dont usually tend to beleive these things.

So you didn't watch the documentary on the history channel on Sunday about the lost book of Nostradamus and the End of Days! FREAKY........:( :D

What validity does the Mayan calendar have over others, pray?

Its proven to be very accurate, They said monday will be followed by tuesday then a wednesday then thursday and Friday culminating in 'The weekend'.
The prediction has come true every week during and since the demise of the Mayan Empire.

The real question is... do I do the Xmas shopping that year just to be safe, or do I risk the wrath of several individuals by spending the money of something bushcrafty instead?

*hmmm*

Somehow I don't think "but the world was supposed to END on Friday" would help!

Nothing at all, except nasty things seem to occur at the end of a grand cycle or long count whatever they call it. Take one pinch of salt and add to taste.

Nag.

It's not just the Mayan long count calendar that ends in 2012, the end of the final 5125 solar year cycle that predicts not the end of the world but the end of linear time as we all know it.
The Hopi Indians have a similar prediction ending 2012, in fact there are about 60 different predictions for this date, some using solar activity, some regarding other more obscure rational.
A bit much to go into detail here but if your interested have a look at Geoff Strays website where he has compiled a list of all things 2012 and I'm not talking The Olympics:) .

Todays date according to the Mayans!
12 . 19 . 15 . 2 . 10
9 Oc
18 Kayab
1750 days until 13.0.0.0.0

The Mayan calendar does not end in 2012. Just as the Gregorian calendar did not end at the conclusion of 1999, neither does the Mayan calendar end at the conclusion of Long Count 12.19.19.19.19. It will simply roll over and start the next cycle at 13.0.0.0.0.
What does worry me are all the computers in the world that use the Mayan calendar for their calculations?
What if they stored only the last 4 of the 5 numbers?

Looks like IT Techies are going to be busy again in a few years time!:)

Yes, your right, that could be a problem.

Mine doesnt, mine runs on this new fangled Hindustan stuff.

I don’t believe all that prophecy BS, it doesn’t take a prophet or genius to realise everything has a beginning (start) and end (finish) and something like the end of a planet is unlikely to be a quiet affair
