Water bottle,
An additional layer (be it shell, windshirt, smock, jumper, down vest)

Little bag of gubbinz (cord to rig the poncho if need be, spare lighter, tinder, talc)
mini FAK (plasters, alcohol wipes, paracetamol, chlorine tablets, condom, couple of other little things like those micro-toothbrushes)

and of course my camera and what I have in my pockets anyway (knife and torch)
Then there are things that are more situational. Sometimes I'll carry a small x10 pair of binos, or goretex over trousers, perhaps a woolie hat and liner gloves in the winter along with an alcohol stove and a 200ml squeeze bottle of fuel.

It does depend on where I am and what I'm up to but, as a general rule, the following are always in my day pack:
- my preferred fixed blade knife
- Silky Pocket Boy saw (the longer one)
- Falkniven sharpening stone (can't remember which one...)
- First aid kit
- 2x 1 litre water bottles
- Crusader cup and lid
- a woolly hat
- a Suunto compass
- a pencil + Write in the Rain pad
- headtorch + spare batteries
- Rab Tarp 2
- HPG Wind Cheater
- Fire lighting bag, usually containing lighter, matches, firesteel, flint and steel, charcloth et cetera - it depends on where I'll be.
- A light fleece/wool layer, just in case.

After long consideration of what passes for a day pack or survival kit in these parts I decided that my 'day pack' (a small pack on the sledge in winter) consists of:-
One axe which gets used for lots of things on trap line setting
One big knife for other things.
Extra glove/mitt if gets cold
Spare socks - a luxury I now delight in, if my feet get damp in snow.
couple of lighters.
Spare line/harness for dogs stuff.

Just shy of Two handwidths length blade - maybe 7". Good all round for many jobs, killing game/gutting animals to cutting string/wood/poles/canvas & cutting food.
