I recently started taking Vitamin D again as some blood tests came back showing it was slightly reduced. Will probably just do it by default over autumn/winter now.

My Dad’s got mid-late stage vascular dementia and I very much don’t want to go down that road.

I had chronically low Vit D at one point in the last 5 years ( not my fault for getting outdoors ) so I invested in Vit D supplementation and purchased a cheap Sunbed - to be used sparingly but intermittently through the Winter months.

I'll be hitting 67 in a few weeks, and luckily still in good health and reasonable shape. I've taken a Wellman over 50 multi vit and a fish oil cap 3-4 times weekly for the past 15 years. I feel it helps to keep me going.

I use vit D and vit K2 (need the K2 to utilise vit D and also shift calcium from blood to bone, important as I am post menopause).

Also glucosamine/chronditrin, bovine derived as I don't get on well with fish or shellfish. If I stop taking it, I notice the stiffness from a bit of arthritis in my fingers.

The vit D helps control the eczema which returned post menopause. I can optimise the dose by watching the response of the current eczema patch (it never goes away but level of itch and inflame varies a lot). Yup, it's that noticeable.

I am now a convert to the power of Beetroot ( Juice ) - Now personally I detest the flavour , but it has very decent science based papers supporting its various positive impacts upon increasing endurance , almost immediate lowering blood pressure immediately via its large amount of Nitrates , helping support & heal the Liver and Kidneys.

I dilute 250ml with water and drink during the day, you can add ingredients to improve the flavour. .

A months supply is about £11.00 for 6 x 1lt cartons via Amazon.

Do you get 100% beetroot juice?

I see 6x 1L for some 90% beetroot and 10% apple juice which apparently tastes good.

Might give it a go - I’ve read some studies showing health benefits for things that I need to keep on top of.

This one- which seems wayyyyyyy cheaper than Beet-It brand but I can't see any major difference. It does contain Apple Juice ( 90% Beet , 9.9% Pressed Apple Juice - Nothing else. ) - I honestly can't taste the Apple Juice.

Cawston Press Brilliant Beetroot Pressed Juice, 1 l, Pack of 6 (Packaging may vary)

I tend to make a 750ml of Green Tea infusion the night before , let that cool and then add the Beetroot juice.

By diluting it down , the typical earthy strong beet flavour is moved to a more mellow palatable taste.

Ah great, that’s the one I was looking at. I love beetroot so will give it a go vanilla and go from there.

Cheers!

I've been a big fan of beetroot juice for some time (after listening to on of Michael Mosley's Just One Thing podcast). I don't like the taste either, but do like the benefit.

Between myself and some friends with played around with some other recipes and the best that we've come up is adding ginger cordial.

I thought of ginger from it's own beneficial effects. It's a real balance though as too much of the cordial results in what we term Ginger Burn!

I'm interested in your mix though as even with mine I struggle to make myself drink it daily and I know I should for various reasons.

Would you mind detailing your recipe more please?

I think your £11 must have been a deal as it's not that now...

I have it on a subscribe and save system . -maybe that accounts for a lot.

Sure - Its not a refined and finalised recipe at this point - Like you I'm tempted to add stronger flavours to lower the beetrootyness of the drink.

I did at one point at Beetroot juice as the base of Chocolate whey powder drinks - the chocolate also managed to change the flavour profile as to be so strong. I was also adding Tumeric and Cinnamon powder so clearly things were getting a little too experimental.

So the idea of adding ( Cold ) Green Tea is that green tea has lots of catechins ( as I'm sure you know ) and its another healthy addition to the body. I need to add water anyway to the Beetroot juice to allow me to drink it ( Beet Juice 250ml , Water 750ml ) which dilutes its flavour enough so I can sip it. So why not add water that has a little summink-summink in that has benefit?

I did make a blackcurrant jelly with beetroot juice whilst I was experimenting how to best get it inside my body and that worked well - blackcurrant being stronger enough to over shadow the earthy beet flavour so i may try to add some blackcurrant juice.

I'd be interested what you find works best - I'm trying to steer clear of sugary cordials to add but it maybe one of those things where by adding something that doesn't make sense on paper ( Say Lemon or Lime juice , Grapefruit juice ) changes the flavour profiles just enough where the original flavour becomes changed to be plausibly palatable.

I love pickled beetroot, and grow, make, and eat my own.
I like to juice some fresh raspberries and add to beet juice, also absolutely delicious added to carrot juice. I discovered these combinations in a polish shop, when I popped in for a quick bottle of something to drink on a hot day somewhere or other.. the carrot and raspberry, though seemingly an odd combination, is amazingly refreshing.

If you like smoothies, then buy the dried powder and mix it up. It makes up like a stock/tea easily too.
I buy a lot of dried powdered veg from Wholefoods online,

but there are other companies too.

Summer Solstice, and there's a knock at the front door. So, I answer and there's a delivery man from the local chemist with a prescription for me.....that I was not expecting, had not requested, etc.,
Turns out my Doctor's had a look at my last blood test and decided that I need VitaminD.

I had six bits of skin removed just before Christmas, not cancerous, but two were supposedly of real concern as moving that way, so I've been covering up with sunblock.

Sometimes, I just can't win.

Thanks.

I just tried some watered down - definitely helps!

I’ve got some plain protein powder. It’s cheap unflavoured….for a reason. Tastes and smells like rotten eggs. I made some of that up with beetroot juice once, just to see.

Never again!!!

:) I did say CHOCOLATE whey powder. Chocolate is I think one of those flavours that can mask over other flavours . Diluted most definitely helps with the juice however.

I have tried Plain in the past and just ended up adding other things to change the taste.

Some beetroot juice has arrived. I LOVE beetroot, but I think 250ml of this in a glass every day would become a struggle really quickly.

I reckon carrot, orange and maybe a dash of ginger would make this into a great smoothie.

The reason I suggest diluting it down is to not just enable drinking it in one quick drink ,but to keep it on your desk , bike , near to where you work or relax and just sip small slurps during the course of the day - the nutrient uptake should be better if you drip feed it into your body and it makes chugging a distant memory
