Hi People,

I have designed a smock, based on an SAS smock but with a few differences.

Happy with my design, I confidently e-mailed SASS, knowing that they're into that type of thing, but unfortuately, they are unable to produce it for me. :(

He said it is too different from the original design. I think it would be easy, but there must be a reason for him not doing it.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that may be willing to produce my smock? Obviously it would have to be to SASS standards.

I don't think I'm going to get very far with this. It's my fault for being too fussy!

Cheers, Julian.

If that doesn't work out, I can give you the address of a company that will make small production runs of high quality outdoor clothing. They generally specialise in the yachting market, but are quite happy to tackle most outerwear.

Cheers,
Toddy

ThanksToddy. I've looked at West Winds and it's looking hopeful again, although they might be expensive. Like you say, If that doesn't work out, I'll try your yachting company.

Cheers, Julian.

The smock as mentioned in #2 post of this thread wasn't a custom job.
Westwinds designed this smock themselves and is to be put in their collection as a whole new smock design.

BCUK got the final prototype / first full version of the new Airedale Jacket, it’s a one off. BCUK asked them for it thinking that it would be a great unique prize.

Hope this helps ;)

could a local tailor/seamstress not be able to do the work if you supplied the material?
Yes, a local tailor could probably make the garment, but as they won't be used to making military type clothing, I doubt it'd be up to the standards I'm after. The stitching wouldn't be the same as on an SAS smock for example.

I can try that option as a last resort, but first I'd like to check out any already existing military clothing manufacturers. Thanks though, I hadn't though of that.

Ahjno, I've written to West Winds and I'm waiting for their reply, so fingers crossed.

Cheers, Julian.

Here's something from the west-winds.co.uk site:

'On all our garments (except Ventile shirt) we can offer a bespoke service whether it is for special sizes, or specifically for ladies or you require a different design altogether. There will be an additional charge for this. For standard sizing see order form.
For national companies and outdoor recreational organizations we do offer a full range off individual clothes including shirts, polo shirts, trousers and fleeces to give your organization that smart, practical and functional corporate look.

We already have many U. K. organizations fitted with West Winds garment
All garments can be embroidered with your corporate logo. (please check prices and availability using one of the below methods)'

How bespoke this is i don;t know. RIng and find out i suppose

Ed,

Thanks, I've checked out the West Winds site. I sent an e-mail asking about the level of "bespokeness" and the garment must be based on an existing model. It can't be a brand new design.

This doesn't prove to be too much of a problem for me as I can pretty much base it on the Antarctic Smock. I just want to do a bit of fine tuning.

Thanks for telling me about West Winds. I knew of Ventile, but I hadn't thought of using it.

In the old Survival Aids catalogue (now Penrith Survival), there used to be an SAS smock made from Ventile. It was £130.00 in the year 1987. How we used to dream about owning one of those when we were at school!
I may now be able to make it a reality, but the smock will be even better.

Cheers, Julian.

You used to dribble over the same catalogue at the same age as when I did? I think I still have it somewhere- I always wanted the hunter's wide brimmed hat....
