Coracle lost in the Wye

There is a guy called Steven Payne who made a pilgrimage from Southampton to Canterbury in authentic costume, including carrying a coracle (he'd made the coracle).


He had an accident in the river Wye at LLandogo and lost his coracle.


If there is anyone in the area, can they keep an eye out for it?

29th dec - coracle is wood and canvas so it will float. It was fully swamped so is likely to drift until it hits a snag and then just stick there.

I've had a word about this morning with some of the old river boys; general consensus seems to be that it's either been hoiked out by somebody local, in which case we'd have heard about it, or it's long gone on the tide.
Tides have been strong lately and the river's been running quite full so not much chance of it being snagged for all this time, and once the other side (downstream) of Tintern it's fast water this time of year.

I'll keep my ear to the ground and I've put it to quite a few folk, so let's hope!

For anyone interested in sleeping in out in 'authentic' kit, it is fascinating to follow this bloke. He makes a regular thing of his pilgrimages and only uses authentic kit, well documented. You can follow him on facebook. He was sleeping out this december with just linen, wool hassock and a cloak, merely a canvas sheet to block the damp beneath him.

that's a real shame he is a good guy who helps the homeless. I imagine it's been took on the tide by now, but just a suggestion on a slim chance you could inform SARA who operate in the area on the off chance they come across it, and also post in song of the paddle forum to ask canoeists to keep an eye out or on a really slim chance but the more that know etc inform the Wye Gillies Association or other fishing bodies in case a bailiff/fisherman comes across it As i understand it he traveled from Plynlimon with the coracle following a route of St. Brendan, what a shame to have lost it after such a journey. I imagine steps have already been taken but just a suggestion though the chances of finding it are slim, good luck links below >>

St Brendan was in Ireland not Wales and sailed off to the West in a currach. But I do hope his boat is found, boats are special.

i am wondering what ''the accident'' was, i would not have fancied falling into the wye in the clothes he was wearing at this time of year, i wonder if he fell in while paddling it or just launching it or something, the main thing is if he is okay and hopefully he is. He was following (with a diversion) a route through Britain thought to have been taken by St Brendan ending at Llancarfan South Wales. Picture below shows him on route in the clothes he was wearing.

oh right, i don't believe he was carrying any spare clothing, must have been froze in those wet heavy clothes.
