Hi all,

I have a mate who needs to send me a video file, but he cant send it via e mail as its too big, about 1/2 gig.

What is the easiest way for him to send it to me, bearing in mind both him and i are not particularly computer literate ?

And before anyone asks, there is absolutely no dodgy content on the file what so ever.

Cheers,

Paul

Write it to a CD or to a memory card/stick and put it in the post.

More computer literate would be to save it as one or a number of rar files and upload to somewhere like rapidshare where you can download it from. It'd take a while to upload though.

Do you need the video file, or just need to see the video? Upload to youtube/photobucket?

A safe and free option is to use Windows Skydrive, which lets you store or share up to 25GB of data. You can set up private folders that only you can view or allow certain people to access too. The only factor is you must have a Microsoft Live account.

Have a look at this page to learn more about it.

Once you have a live account ( assuming you don't already, you can log into your skydrive account using it. You can create a folder to put files into and share them with groups or individuals, it's fairly simple to follow and designed for non geeks in mind.

If you both install some kind of messaging system(MSN messenger, ICQ or the likes) then he can just send you the file.
At your end the program will ask you where you want to save it, then you just sit back and wait for it to finish.

up to one gig free. If it's a one off deal, and there are no downloads for three weeks the whole thing expires after 90 day

there are othe sites, but I know nothing about them

If you or your mate have dodgy internet connections that drop out all the time, sending over the the web isn't really going to work, do as suggested above and stick it on a CD or something. Or use a P2P program, just like all the ones used for downloading the latest blockbuster. You don't need to share it with the world only the two of you. The advantage of this is if you lose connection to the web, you can continue to download where you left off. have a nosey at pando.com - never used them personally, I just googled 'how to send large files over the internet' and had a look see.

For total non computery people go with the cd option, if your a little savey and have good connections either msn, google or yahoo chat will let you transfer stuff, or skydrive are good. Of course all this downloading will depend greatly on the upload speed, which most of the time isn't really that fast at all...

you can set up a mini peer to peer connection and sent to each others IP direct. free software is downloadable. its a bit like skype or laplink. gotomypc has a free trial you just need to set up access to eachothers machines so you can draw the file down direct if it allows that much access straight away.

2large2email do a free plan where you can send upto 100mb at a time with a 1gig per month allowance.

here you go this is freeware now and should be simple enough. your mates broadband will have a fixed IP like yours so its just a case of getting his ip.

1/2 gig 500 megabyes..

Best option would be ftp server not knowing what operating system you have I guess windows as most do know adays set up using i think its called warftp or cuteftp or something like that.

Failing that be really nice and ill give you an account on my ftp server and you can upload it there and download it as well. I have a 100MB internet connect so should be fast enough ;)

or use something like this and send it via email
