When not in use raise it up off the ground to stop it absorbing water. I slip a couple of bricks or lumps of 2X2 under mine. I also put an upturned dustbin over mine to stop it getting wet. Had the same block for about 3 years now and it gets a beating year round for kindling and logs to heat the house.

I removed bark from mine as well, it does help to dry the block out when it gets wet. I also saturated the end grains both ends when I first got it with Cuprinol wood preserver. I dont know if this made a difference, but th block is about 3 years old has been used constantly, and has years of life left in it. The block I have is Pine.

I took the bark off the one I got as I felt that retained water and bugs leading to rot.
