The really thick stuff used in canoe building is taken from live trees of much larger diameter. If this bark has come from dead trees as stated I would be leary of trying to make anything from it that involves folding. Birch bark resists decay long after the tree as desintegrated into punk, but it does not maintain its flexibility forever.

'the tube is 12" long by 4.5" dia so if you opened it out it would be about 12"x14"
Its about 1/16" thick and surprisingly flexible.
I would pack it in a card tube to protect it in post.'
So it's a lot thicker than I have seen in the uk (but then I've not been everywhere!)
