Canadian Birch bark for sale

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Judging from the photo show (and only that so I may be worng here) I'd venture to say that this is UK birchbark and not Canadian.

I can (and have) collected bark of this quality from my local woods and made several items out of it.

True canadian birk bark is more like Elk hide than this thin card like stuff, hence you can cover canoes with it.

Just my opinion but there you go :D

Bam.

Sorry - I dont mean to be contrary but I think the thickness looks about right for dead trees of that diameter. The really thick stuff used in canoe building is taken from live trees of much larger diameter. If this bark has come from dead trees as stated I would be leary of trying to make anything from it that involves folding. Birch bark resists decay long after the tree as desintegrated into punk, but it does not maintain its flexibility forever.

No problem at all Jeff, as i said it's hard to tell from a photo. I also totally agree about the flexibility of this type of bark and would also not recomend it.

While as I said I can't be sure about where this bark came from, what I can be sure of is that everyone here in the UK is more than capable of collecting bark of this thickness in their local woods... I live in the south east and if we've got it here then it'll grow in the rest of the UK.

I emailed to seller:

'the tube is 12" long by 4.5" dia so if you opened it out it would be about 12"x14"
Its about 1/16" thick and surprisingly flexible.
I would pack it in a card tube to protect it in post.'

So it's a lot thicker than I have seen in the uk (but then I've not been everywhere!)

Still sounds dodgy to me....bark off dead trees really usualy isn't very flexible.

And that thickness is all over the place.... if you want some then I can post you some if you like? :)
