In beech/sycamore woodland on chalk. Not very many of them. I saw two plants all day, just randomly mixed in with the more common stuff.

Did it have any kind of smell when you brushed the leaves?

I brought a sprig home with me. Quite a strong smell, but I can't quite place it. A bit like a nettle.

Got it!

Non-native sort of valerian, most common in south of Scotland.

Far too big.

Interesting stuff, Dog's Mercury. I cooked some up once thinking it was something else, and the pan turned dark blue! It was once used as a dye.

No. That's got slightly hairy leaves and a woodier stem. This is a herb of some sort, not something that is going to grow into a small tree.
