When the wind swings round to a Northerly or Easterly (as it just has) and there is an extra nip in the air, I wheel out a 1990's vintage Swedish army M90 cold weather coat. For such a lightly padded coat, it is amazingly warm and it keeps your body heat whwere you want it ! It is long and tough and paired with a lightweight fleece underneath, some gloves and a warm hat - good to go ;)

Yes indeed !! However for best effect, pair it with the matching Swedish cold weather hat and a pair of knee length leather yard boots - makes you look like a film extra from "Stalingrad" !!

Just looking at getting some new boots. My Bates GX8 have started to leak after 10 years of winter use. Not hard use, but daily dog walks when it’s wet out. They’ve been faultless, really light, comfortable, and totally waterproof. All I ever treated them with is Sno-Seal once a year, liberally applied and blasted in with a hairdryer.

I’d have another pair in a pinch, amazing longevity in a boot of this type, but I just don’t want that black tactical police look again.

I am 4 years in to a pair of Altberg Defenders I got from a surplus place in Essex. Hands down they are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned, and the workmanship is faultless. I paid £40 for mine in supergrade condition but I would pay full price for these

I am similarly attached to my Lowa Renegades. Incredibly comfortable straight out of the box and so far pretty bomb proof. Will likely get yet another pair after these ones get used into oblivion, as I’ve yet to find a pair of boots which are truly ‘buy it once’ with enough use.

Used to wear mine watching my kids football teams. Wish I tried that outfit. Might not have had to put up with foul mouthed cheeky parents who were so called expects at football and their kids future premiership players.

I would say a Saint James 100% wool Jumper (mdle Officier or Matelot).

They are like the brittanic gansey (made not far away) : very tight windproof wave, very good quality, snug fitting. Of course this is wool knit so it is not armour.

Hmm, I have a pair of those I just can't stand.
The uppers are great but the soles have always just been a little slippery when wet (You could call an album that) and I've never trusted them on hard surfaces like rocks.
Even after a few hundred miles worth of dog walking I just can't think of anyone I dislike enough to give em to.
Initially I assumed it was just mold release agent and would wear off. I've not heard of anyone else with the same complaint so assume its possibly a bad batch?
Also the soles are noisy and make a right old clump clump sound (possibly related issue) so I'm just not a fan of them at all.
I much prefer my Meindl german military boots but they don't last forever, maybe about 2000 miles or so of regular dog walks and then they're about done.

I would agree with that great boots comfy and well built but mega slippy .we have high gloss tiles in the kitchen and they are dangerous on them

Ahh, so I'm not the only one that can't be done with Altberg Defenders then. I have slate on the floor in our kitchen and they always feel like I've dropped a bit of washing up liquid on the floor.
Then out on a pavement when its wet its the same thing, just a bit slippery.
I once wore them out on the fells and never again.
On rocks when I'm normmally pretty surefooted I was like a baby giraffe.

I only have a sample of one pair to go by so its possible that others have better soles and mine got through a bad quality control department but I can't recommend them to others til I know the rest arent as bad.

A Geoff Wood belt.
10 years old. No sign of wear, but the leather gets softer & the patina gets richer every day.

I still have a belt that fastened my trousers when I was 18, it will not even go round my waist these days though.

my girlfriends stockman coat by Drizabone feels like it will outlast either of us. heavy compared to modern coats though.
