There's a thriving bushcraft community developing at Chopwell Forest in Durham. I'm joining Friends of Chopwell (£5 per year) and I'll have access to loads of woodland to practice my bushcraft skills, only a few miles from home. It's a community woodland and open to the public. I do the Chopwell forest festival every year but find myself going there more and more just to chill out in the woods. If anyone's interested it at a place called High Spen.

Here's their website:

Excellent news Eric, I will certainly be having a look at the festival this year.

Sorry to point this out though, Chopwell woods are actually in Tyne and Wear, not Co Durham.

Oops! Of course it is. I'm so used to driving up to Scotland, or over to the Lakes to bushcraft. Chopwell is more or less on my doorstep so I just assumed it was in the county.

no camping or fircraft is allowed in the wood unless pre arranged.

most of the local bushcraft bods including myself are in the woods every weekend.
but insurance etc means we can only light fires etc on organised days.

but I reccomend the festival to anyone remotely intrested in forest life .
