Over the years I’ve accumulated a lot of tat. I’m making regular trips to our local recycling centre.

I am well aware that one person’s junk is another’s resource.

so:

Is it worth having a thread where last chance items can be advertised for anyone to take - donor pays postage. (After all they are effectively buying living space!)

I’ve got accumulated mess(y) kit that will go to the big skip in the sky very soon.

That wouldn’t be a bad idea i reckon, as after all as the old saying goes one mans trash is another mans treasure

I can see this being the issue - it's therefore costing the donor to give away the item? I could understand the recipient paying the postage, rather than the donor?

That could be the whole problem with the idea; postage and shipping isn't cheap these days. I suppose it depends on the value to people. I think you're right though, if recipient pays it's because they see value in the item.

Yes indeed. Please don't take this as me trying to put down your very good idea Pattree.

Not really forum useful, but I use Freecycle to move things on to others in the local area. The deal is they collect, and therefore the only costs are the recipient's travel costs. I've not had to go to the dump in years as people seem to be very willing to take on upcycling projects!

How about a pass it on box?

You recieve the box and take out what you want, then top up and pass on to the next recipient.

That way, everyone gets a surprise.

If the idea were to be adopted it would differ from the gift it on thread in that:

I have been highly impressed by the quality of some gifts on offer. This thread would be anything, rust not withstanding.

and

It wouldn’t involve the angst as you, the recipient, have to think up something to gift on.

Recipient pays is over complicated:

* Donor mails junk and notes cost.
* Doner messages recipient with previously unstated postage.
*Recipient makes payment by a method acceptable to donor.

Donor pays shipping - Cost of post would be estimated by donor before deciding to post an offer in BcUK. Too expensive? - don’t offer.
I’m not about to offer the wardrobe or a pallet of terra cotta ridge tiles here on BcUK!

I often toss my stuff over the wall into the heap that is being approached by a bulldozer and wondering if this really is the only thing that I can do with it.

Edited to add:
@Tengu Surprise or shock? Sounds like a big parcel that you are circulating but - say some more, I’m intrigued.

That would be a logistical unrealistic nightmare. Topped off with the fact that you’re getting a box full of unknown potential crap that you’re compelled to post onto the next person without finding anything useful in there because it’s literally full of nothing you’d ever want. Massive costly gamble that wouldn’t go far.

Would only work on a very local basis or bringing Tat ( along with camping gear ) to a Bushcraft meet. Then potentially no one would want it and you have to cart it all home again.

Sentiment - good.
Logistics - difficult to impossible.

Sounds like an expensive way to go about the whole thing! Who is going to be spending money posting things on that they don’t want?

Could there be the option for either? Offer up an item and say in the post whether you are paying for postage, open to collection, or say recipient needs to pay postage.
I agree.

I don’t think the recipient paying for postage is too much hassle or complicated. If there is a donor who wants to pay for it that’s great but it certainly shouldn’t be the standard expectation.

As someone who spends a lot of time in junk shops I can say that one factor that it needs is volume. Not far from here is Dagfields “Antiques and Crafts” a collection of barns containing hundreds of junk stalls. It is noticeable that the apparently successful ones in terms of turnover have basic tat piled high. Once it is neatly spaced and called “Collectible” or “Decor” I see the same stuff visit after visit (months apart).
