Is there any moderator objection or input in this?
Full Members are already welcome to post adverts in Classifieds offering items for just the cost of postage.

This all sounds a lot like Swap Shop, open to everyone, but the person offering saying they don't want anything in exchange, but could the recipient pay postage.

The problem I see with this as things stand is that Swap rules say no money to change hands.

If the rules are changed, or a new forum created to allow for offering items for just the cost of postage, there is the chance for people to try to game the system by asking for more postage than they actually use. Or at least they could appear to be doing so, awkward to police.

I well know the time and effort I can put in to packaging up awkward shaped or delicate items, I get materials free from work, but it can take an entire evening cutting down and re-forming boxes and finding the right padding. More than once the postage has turned out to be more than I quoted because of packaging weight, or size of the item being too big for RM, and I have had to swallow the increase, which tends to leave an after taste. When my quoted postage price is more than what is stamped on the package, that is where the difference goes, packing materials, but I can imagine that if people started scrutinising, questions could be asked. Certainly on EBay some sellers appear to inflate postage to offset low asking prices.

Is it worth having a thread where last chance items can be advertised for anyone to take - donor pays postage. (After all they are effectively buying living space!)

I've often wondered if there could be a 'free to good home' thread rather than just passing on old tat.

I often have stuff that others would find useful but I don't want anything in return. If we had a free to good home thread then people could offer up whatever they have.

As for postage costs, that could be up to the offerer, I've never asked for postage and just ask for the recipient to give money to charity if they insist. But that can depend on the item.

Perhaps too much to organise but I have wondered if I can send a bulk package to someone who goes to one of the moots. For example, I have quite a bit of thick ivy and I gather it can be useful for firedrills. It would be cheaper to send a single package to a moot if several people would be interested in it.

My only concern would be wanting items to go to members you want to use the items themselves rather than someone who might take loads of stuff and sell it.

I think “Free to good home” is an excellent idea but I don’t think we need to vet the recipient for their level of goodness :). If they take it it’s theirs.

Tat or not tat is in the eye of the beholder. I remember when you couldn’t get rid of an old Alvis sports car. They were going for as little as £25 when a used Heinkel bubble car was selling for £35.
