Today I saw (and pretty much fell in love with) a really nice Barbour waxed canvas satchel. This kind of thing isn't a million miles away from a Duluth-style bag.

Now obviously Duluth and Frost River have a great reputation. But if I want to buy British (and ideally I would), is it just Barbour, or are there other renowned traditional British bag manufacturers that I could look into?

Cheers,

Mark

there are pelenty making nice canvas/leather cartridge bags.. i think you may have a problem finding anyone making nice quality backpacks ect though.

Sorry for the late reply - I've been out and about over the bank holiday weekend.

I had no idea what a cartridge bag was until I looked it up - seems that there's a whole host of new leads if I decided to take up hunting or fishing.

Cheers for the link torc - seems like some nice stuff.

I was just wondering whether there is the British manufacturer that is talked about in the same hallowed tones as Duluth. Maybe there isn't (and if there is it'll probably just mean overpriced!). But if I'm going to spend a load of money on a bag, I'd want it to be built superbly and last for years - Barbour can do that with their jackets, but I don't know about their bags.

Mark, as the guys have said , there's a number of field bag makers in the UK. I spent a while looking for a good shoulder bag to use in the field and finally decided on www.chapman-bags.co.uk . The range is superb, with models for just about any job. The staff were incredibly helpful when I wanted to 'tweak' one of the standard models. They've a number of colour options, I went for olive green with a dark 'australian nut' leather, it's a nice combo. Even with my custom options I had the bag within a week, and I expect I'll have it for a very long time.

You could also look at Brady bags. very nice, but very expensive and no custom options afaik. The Barbour bags are nice as you mentioned, but for that kind of money I'd go with a dedicated bag maker (like Chapman!). Rob.
