Bowstrings

I've got this project to make a longbow, string and arrows from first principles but am having trouble with the string. Anybody know a method to twist in short lengths of hemp or flax to make a thread which is long enough (and strong enough!) to use on a string jig? The standard two ply "rolling on your leg" method seems to untwist if you then try to join two of the threads together.

Any ideas?
