I bought myself a big hammer at a car boot sale on Sunday and my father was right: a small blow from a big hammer is better than a big blow from a small hammer! I am really enjoying this forging lark. Forging a knife blade is more satisfying than grinding it, I found. I like the raw forge look of the blades. I am getting to the point where I am beginning to be able to manipulate the steel to do what I want (just) but I still have plenty to learn.
They both have thin blades, from 2mm at the handle, ending at less than 1mm at the tip, but not quite a flat bevel, yet! The fixed knife has a 1/2 tang. I think my next folder will look like this one, but will be a lock back. I need to practice getting the back spring right.
I need to make myself a more efficient forge now.
