Here's a pic of a very self concious me in a shirt I made out of an old woolen blanket.
I got a pattern and excellent advice from Toddy at the 1st Scottish meet, and a quick course on how to use a sewing machine from the wife.

The original plan was a swanni type shirt, but it's not exactly what happened, I didn't have enough material for the hood. It's been dyed, and the next plan is to treat it with something to make it water resistant (any suggestions gratefully recieved).

Okay, I'm, impressed, very well done :D
I've got a stash of blankets just now to be cut up for padding achetons so I can send you some extra wool if you do want a hood.
If you wash in loads of fabric conditioner, just wash it all cool, it'll help the wool's natural water repellant.

Cheers,
Toddy

Pete I only wish that I was as personable as you are, all in all very much a top guy and a pleasure to meet, I look forward to meeting you again.

Neil1 is far more talented than I when it comes to these things, I am a mere novice learning from the likes of him and Espy.

I would also like to learn from Cody about scroungeing bacon sandwiches, that is if it is OK with pumbaa who are another couple of top characters as were all really on the Dartmoor meet.

I look forward to seeing you all again at some time.

Speak to Neil1 about how they are made and what goes into it as far as the blanket coats go, you could do far worse and I will gaurentee that it is a bit of kit that I will use all the time:)

Thanks Leon, that was kind of you, and I am looking forward to meeting up with you and Neil again.
I think I may well speak to Neil about making one myself...........or maybe getting the mother-inlaw to do it, she's good with a sewing machine

Take care :beerchug:

There is a Nikwax wash-in treatment that aparently works well on Swannis' etc.

I can't remember wich one though I'm sure I read it somewhere on this site. Sounds like it would work well on the blanket shirt.

Noce work BTW - I got some grey & brown blankets from our local Army surplus for £7 ish - I fancy making something, I have 2 Swannis' so I was thinking some trousers/chaps of some sort.

A blanket shirt isnt meant to be waterproof, they are meant to go under canvas anoraks, according to me wee book :)

dude, looks good. how does it feel on?
Not itchy, very warm,

wore it to church to my wife's horror :lmao:

You may be right WNZer, I had a windproof jacket on that day and the combination was just fine. When I dyed it, once out the spinner I wore it damp to keep the shape and it was (being wool) warm..

I have put the pictures in my gallery of my wool creation.
I used my jerkin under my ventile smock this weekend just gone, while on a tracking course. The weather was horrendous with a lot of local flooding and as your are tracking you are right out there in the weather. I stayed dry and warm all weekend, taking it off only to sleep ( and then it got folded and used as a toasty warm pillow in my hammock).
I designed it for general use in the woods rather than just as warm kit, hence no sleeves, it gives greater freedom of movement when using an axe or using a bowdrill.
