Recently on Donal MacIntyre's programme in Papua New Guinea there were brief
Accurist trailers beforehand showing the Accurist watch and the soundtrack included
an animal call (I've presumed it's a bird) which is a very high pitched whistle, and I
think if anyone heard it and was asked "what does that remind you of?" they'd say
"rainforest" and / or "jungle".

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and, if so, what creature is making this
sound?

I am working my way through the many sound clips on the web but have not yet
found it. Even found the Accurist page but the trailers have no audio...

I might do that...

(scurries off to see who Dare Films are)

EDIT - Ah they produced the actual film :)
I suppose I should email Accurist as it's the unknown animal in their trailer that I'm after.
Then again Donal MacIntyre might also know the answer!

Thanks, Jo

Jodie,

Not quite New Guinean but in a lot of ´jungle´programs, the sound of the south american Screaming piha (Lipaugus vociferans) is featured. It´s loud wolfwhistle-like sound drove Redmond O´Hanlon nuts during his jungletrek in Venezuela. Here´s a link with a picture and the whistle (and some other southamerican jungledwellers in case I am wrong:rolleyes: ):

Thank you!

That's exactly the one. I LOVE that sound - it's so evocative. The one thing missing
from the palm house at Kew!

There's a good one here too: http://www.ecocam.com/nature/Suriname.html
(two small pictures next to each other, one of the bird, one of the howler monkey,
overlaid with blue waveform - click on picture, then on 'ecocam' to open file).
The white bellbird sounds like something out of star trek.

It makes me want to go to the rainforest - if only I didn't hate travelling, heat, humidity
or being bitten by insects or worse :D

There's another piha here: http://www.bl.uk/collections/sound-archive/listen.html
