After reading jon r's excellent 'Birch Bark Container Tutorial' I had a go at making a small matchbox. The bark I used came from a tree I felled for fire wood. Given a warm on the stove the bark became quite flexible.

It's amazing stuff, I've only ever used birch bark for fire lighting before.
The top and base are made of Ash and I used jon's thorn pin method to secure the base.

I cheated with the cordage and used raffia type stuff left over from Christmas, yet to try my hand at natural cordage.

A Happy New Year everyone,

Pete.

Nice looking box. I see you have used the harder "inner" bark as well to give it thickness and strength (and a snack if you get hungry).

Just a note to others though that using the inner bark of a living tree will probably kill it.
